But here’s where it gets interesting: MSI’s next Claw might just skip the Intel route entirely and leap straight into AMD's camp, specifically with their next-gen Ryzen AI hardware.

What’s got us talking? The rumor mill is buzzing about a potential shift to AMD’s Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme chip. Now, before you get too excited, it’s important to note that this chip doesn’t exist… at least not in the way you might think. Back at CES, AMD introduced the Ryzen Z2 family, with the top-tier model being the Ryzen Z2 Extreme. But here’s the twist: that Z2 Extreme is based on the same silicon as the Ryzen AI 300 series processors, which is where things start to get a bit murky.

So, is MSI really eyeing the Ryzen Z2 Extreme, or is there a new, unannounced chip on the horizon? It’s not entirely clear, but what we can be sure of is that whatever MSI is considering, it will likely be built on the Ryzen AI 300’s architecture. That could mean up to 12 Zen 5 CPU cores and 16 RDNA 3.5 GPU compute units—although, for now, the Ryzen Z2 Extreme only has 8 CPU cores enabled.

This whole AMD pivot idea started with French Xwitter user CodeCommando, who hinted at an "AMD Z2 APU" back in January. However, it looks like CodeCommando might’ve been referring to an updated version of the current Claw AI+, which hasn’t launched yet, despite Intel-powered Claw models already being on the market.

To make things even more interesting, MSI has exclusively used Intel chips in its gaming handhelds so far. If they do make the jump to AMD, it raises a couple of questions. While competition is always great for consumers, a market dominated by AMD-powered handhelds could make things feel a little… monotonous. Still, it’s hard to fault MSI if this turns out to be true. After all, Intel has already confirmed that Lunar Lake is a one-off project, and there’s no direct successor in their upcoming Panther Lake lineup. With no clear Intel processor to power the next-gen Claw, going with AMD might just be the smartest move—especially since Intel’s full-fat laptop CPUs aren’t exactly cut out for the power demands of handheld gaming.

Either way, we’re excited to see how these rumored Ryzen Z2 Extreme-powered handhelds could shake up the scene!
